Earlier this year, we published ground-breaking research on the long-term impact of primary school exclusions. These are some of the key findings:
- Almost all (97%) of those excluded at primary school had a Special Educational Need and Disability (SEND)
- Over 90% of children excluded from primary school don’t pass GCSE English and maths

The latest Department for Education data on exclusions and suspensions showed the highest recorded annual number of exclusions/suspensions. We have seen a concerning rise in exclusions/suspensions for the youngest children in our classrooms. School exclusions are rising faster in primary than in secondary schools.
We need to support our youngest children and to make sure high-quality support is available as early as possible to prevent issues from becoming crises.
